Maxime Bode, LLM International Economic Law, 2024

Tell us a little bit about your life/background before Edinburgh Law School

Before joining the University of Edinburgh, I was studying a double degree master's in Law and Management at the University of Liège in Belgium.

What did you study at Edinburgh Law School, and why did you choose the programme?

I studied an LLM in International Economic Law. I chose this program because of the classes that allowed me to learn more about various subjects that were of great interest to me, such as International Investment Law and WTO Law. All these classes have been invaluable in my current profession.

What do you think is unique to the Edinburgh Law School experience, and what are some of your favourite memories?

What is unique about Edinburgh Law School is not only the numerous amazing professors that are part of it, but also the dynamic way of teaching, and the will to captivate every student.

One of my favourite memories was the possibility to participate in the Vis Moot Court thanks to the Law School's support and Professor Daza Vargas in particular.

What have you been up to since graduating/what are you doing after graduation (e.g., your professional or further academic pursuits since leaving Edinburgh Law School) and how have your degree studies with us helped you in this?

After graduating, I became a lawyer in Belgium and joined the Law firm Van Bael & Bellis in their Trade practice group.

My LLM at the University of Edinburgh greatly aided me in pursuing my career aspirations. Indeed, the University of Edinburgh is an incredible environment to learn thanks to the professors who provide inspiring and insightful classes, but also for their continuous support and kind advice throughout the year.

The administrative staff of the University was also invaluable in any situation that students can experience, particularly for foreign students.

What advice would you give current Edinburgh Law School students?

I would advise you to live your studies to the fullest extent. Enjoy your years there, appreciate everything that this University has to offer and do not hesitate to seek help when you feel lost.
