Eve Aycock, LLM Global Environment & Climate Change Law, 2019

Tell us a little bit about your life/background before Edinburgh Law School

I grew up on the Isle of Man and studied my first degree, an LLB in International & European Law, in the Netherlands with a semester abroad in Australia.

What did you study at Edinburgh Law School and why did you choose the programme?

I studied the LLM in Global Environment & Climate Change Law. Having scratched the surface of international environmental law during my first degree, I wanted to expand my knowledge of this field. The LLM programme offered an excellent variety of courses and I was particularly drawn to the programme’s focus on law of the sea. In total I studied 5 courses: international climate change law, international environmental law, European environmental law, international law of the sea, and international protection of the marine environment.

What do you think is unique to the Edinburgh Law School experience and what are some of your favourite memories?

The magical setting of the Old College combined with the small, friendly and international community was what made Edinburgh special to me. My favourite memories were spending the summer in Edinburgh whilst writing my Master’s thesis. I loved walks around Holyrood Park and Calton Hill, surfing in Dunbar and hiking in the Pentlands, and the Fringe festival was a great experience.

What have you been up to since graduating/what are you doing after graduation (e.g., your professional or further academic pursuits since leaving Edinburgh Law School) and how have your degree studies with us helped you in this?

Since graduating, I studied the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) and Legal Practice Course (LPC) in Cambridge and Liverpool respectively, before moving back to the Isle of Man to train as an Advocate. I am due to be called to the Bar in April 2024. Studying the LLM helped me to develop a niche in environmental law which is a nascent but fast-growing field on the Isle of Man. In 2023 I was selected in the Isle of Man’s 30 Under 30 for my work in environmental law.

What advice would you give current Edinburgh Law School students?

Work hard play hard – Edinburgh has so many opportunities to get involved in sports and outdoor activities.
