Edinburgh Law School Professor Burkhard Schafer, together with Sheriff Adrian Cottam and Suzy Huston from the Judicial Institute for Scotland, organised a series of events for the European Judicial Training Network on the use of AI in the court room. Over 40 judges from across Europe attended this week-long event, hosted by the German Richterakademie in Trier, sharing their experiences, questions and concerns about the use of AI in the justice system. Attendees also received instructions and ideas on the ethically responsible use of AI in their daily work.

"Judging and AI. A Philosophical Approach” assessed if and to what extent artificial intelligence may be able to replace humans in judging and judicial decision making. In addition to the technical and operational questions that this debate poses, the seminar also asked more fundamental questions that need to be answered: What is judging and to what extent is judging an inherently human activity that cannot and should not be taken over by machines?
