8th Edinburgh International Willem C Vis International Commercial Arbitration Pre-Moot takes place ahead of final rounds in Vienna
Tue 4 June 2019
The 8th Edinburgh International Willem C Vis International Commercial Arbitration Pre-Moot took place on Saturday 16th March and Sunday 17th March 2019.
The event has grown significantly over the years from its humble beginnings to become the largest mooting event in Scotland. This year, 21 universities from around the world participated in the Pre-Moot and their respective claims and responses were considered by 60 arbitrators including the Hon Lady Wolffe, senior members of the Faculty of Advocates (including the Vice-Dean Angela Grahame QC), and members of the Scottish Arbitration Centre, as well as legal practitioners from throughout Scotland and Europe.
The Pre-Moot is an important step towards preparations for the final rounds in Vienna. Students have been working hard on the case for more than six months. The Edinburgh Pre-Moot provides them with an opportunity to test their preparation by providing them with a platform to compete against one other and obtain feedback from seasoned arbitrators, legal practitioners, and academics from diverse legal backgrounds.
The Edinburgh team performed well in Vienna, where they competed against 378 teams from across the world. The team learned a lot and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
The growth of the Edinburgh Pre-Moot has come with its challenges. Successfully organising an event of this calibre required much support and hard work from the organisers, the Edinburgh Law School and staff. None of it would have been possible without the support of our sponsors, the Scottish Arbitration Centre, the Scottish offices of CMS and the Faculty of Advocates. Their indispensable support over the years has allowed this event to grow to what it has become today. Edinburgh Law School and the Edinburgh Vis Moot Team wish to extend their utmost gratitude for this as we look forward to the 9th edition of the Edinburgh Pre-Moot to be held on 7th and 8th March 2020.
