Women in Law: Living and Working in the time of Covid-19 - What have we learnt and where to next?

The Edinburgh Foundation for Women in Law is pleased to be hosting a virtual listening event inviting women in the legal field to share their experiences of working and living in the era of Covid-19.

Gender inequality has been a persistent issue across the Scottish legal industry. Despite accounting for more than 50% of legal professionals, there are disproportionately fewer women in senior positions and women continue to earn less on average than their male counter-parts in similar roles.

And then the pandemic hit. New challenges arose, especially for women who bear the disproportionate burden of job losses, being furloughed, and caring responsibilities including, for some, juggling working from home with childcare and homeschooling. On the other hand, the pandemic has resulted in significantly increased levels of home working and, for some, flexible work patterns, which previously had been viewed as unworkable within the legal context.

We invite you to join us in our virtual listening event to share your experiences or simply listen to those of others. We will be joined by Kirsty Nicholson (Partner, Addleshaw Goddard LLP) and Jamila Archibald (Solicitor, Shepherd and Wedderburn LLP) who will start our discussion before hearing from you.

Key points to address include:

  • What have been the challenges of working and living through the Covid-19 pandemic?
  • Have there been any positives?
  • What will be the challenges and opportunities going forward?

We will share some of the themes from this event through an anonymised briefing note on our website, to shed some light on the challenges and potential ways forward for women in the Scottish legal profession.
