On 8 May, Singapore’s Parliament passed the Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Bill (POFMA). The law is ostensibly meant to deal with “fake news” and misinformation online, but has been heavily criticised by academics, journalists, activists, legal experts, and international groups for its potential impact on freedom of expression, press freedom and even academic freedom in Singapore.

Kirsten Han, Editor-in-Chief of New Naratif, a platform for Southeast Asian journalism and awarded a Human Rights Press Award for her commentaries on the issue of “fake news” and freedom of expression in Singapore, discusses how to walk the line between guarding against disinformation campaigns and protecting freedom of speech.
