Moot Court Room, Old College

The ECPL is delighted to invite you to a symposium on “The Law of Property in Scotland – Past, Present, and Future” to mark the publication of the second edition of Professor Kenneth Reid’s The Law of Property in Scotland.

The first edition of The Law of Property in Scotland was published as a standalone volume in 1996 as an updated reissue of the 1993 entry in volume 18 of the The Laws of Scotland: The Stair Memorial Encyclopaedia. The original work marked a significant contribution in the recovery of property law as a cohesive and unitary subject, distinct from the previous fragmented approach, heavily focused on land and conveyancing.

Similarly, the second edition was first published as a reissue of the Stair Memorial Encyclopaedia in December 2025, followed shortly after by the standalone book in January 2026. It is a considerable contribution to legal scholarship which has been 30 years in the making.

Speakers will include Professor Kenneth Reid, reflecting on the process of updating the volume, Professor Frankie McCarthy (Scottish Law Commission), Malcolm Combe (University of Strathclyde), Professor Andrew Steven (University of Edinburgh), and Dr Alasdair Peterson (University of Edinburgh). Additional contributors will be confirmed nearer the date. Each session will have three presenters followed by a Q&A.
