Traditionally, many universities have been established as secular bodies, with no affiliation to particular religious beliefs—bar the limited exceptions of those universities who have explicit links with certain faiths such as Christianity.
Increased diversity in the staff and student bodies raises new questions as to the relationship between academic inquiry and learning and religious belief. This is not limited to the legal protection of religious freedom, which is provided by the Equality Act 2010. It encompasses perhaps broader questions about how faith intersects with how we research, learn and reflects upon complex issues.
With this event, we hope to have an informal conversation about these questions.
