Punishment in Global Peripheries: Theoretical and comparative notes
How should we think about prisons in the global South, other than as ‘mere’ copies of a Northern template? Can we approach these institutions without exoticizing them, and the extremity of their problems? Can scholars of penal questions North and South thus embark upon a more equal and fruitful dialogue? This paper explores these challenges through a discussion of the recent proliferation of forms of ‘inmate governance’ in Latin American prisons.
