Decolonising global health: against neglect, extraction, and imperialism

Dr Arianne Shahvisi, Brighton and Sussex Medical School

About the seminar
One of the most pronounced global divides is that of health, with patterns of disease burden barely shifting from decade to decade, as Global South populations are disproportionately affected by poor health. In this talk, I confront the reality of racism-related health disparities at the global level, using a range of case studies to explore the ways in which Global North states, institutions, and ideas enable and conceal neglect, extraction, and imperialism in relation to the health of Global South populations. I show that the patterns of colonialism are alive and well in global health, and health inequality cannot be combatted until we recognise this. Accordingly, I argue that considering history and political economy allows us to move away from discourses of charity and saviourism and towards those of responsibility and reparation.
