This event is hosted by the School of Social and Political Science and the Edinburgh Centre for International and Global Law, University of Edinburgh.

Meet with Shane Spelliscy Director General of the Trade Law Bureau of the Government of Canada and Deputy Legal Adviser at Global Affairs Canada and co-chair of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) Working Group III.

As co-chair of the UNCITRAL WG III, Shane has the challenging task of facilitating intergovernmental discussions on the reform of investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS). International investment agreement and ISDS have been criticised by governments, academics and NGOs and other stakeholders for being bias in favour of investors, for its high costs against States' public budgets, and their alleged interference with States' regulatory freedom.

Shane will debunk some myths but will also share some insights on the debates held by States at UNCITRAL WG III.

Mr. Spelliscy will also share some insight on his career, the challenges and opportunities of co-chairing an intergovernmental working group,  and reflect on the future of international investment law.

After the talk, staff and students are invited to join us for cake and coffee
