The Mason Institute is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the first publication of the UK’s leading textbook, Mason and McCall Smith’s Law and Medical Ethics, with the 12th edition recently published in July 2023.

The book will be officially launched by Lord Carloway, Lord President of the Court of Session and Lord Justice General of Scotland.

The original authors, Professors J. Kenyon Mason and Alexander McCall Smith, set out to publish a textbook that focused on medical law and its relationship with medical practice and modern ethics.

Edinburgh Law School’s rich tradition of research-led teaching of medical law and ethics has been continued in successive editions of the textbook with contributions by Edinburgh colleagues on established and emerging topics in the field. They include consent, mental health, health research, the regulation of health professionals, clinical negligence, organ donation, reproduction and assisted dying.

This is a hybrid event.
