Jessup Mooting Demonstration and Fundraiser 2024
Location:
Teaching Room 03,
Edinburgh Law School,
Old College
Date/time
Thu 21 March 2024
17:30 - 19:30
The Jessup is the world’s largest and most prestigious international law competition. Centred around a fictional case before the International Court of Justice, students spend months preparing written and oral submissions around cutting-edge issues of international law. This year’s case raises issues related to the right to political expression in international law, statelessness and nationality, and the UN Security Council’s authority in the peaceful settlement of disputes.
This year’s University of Edinburgh team qualified in the London rounds (16-18 February 2024) and has moved on to the international rounds in Washington, D.C. (30 March-6 April 2024). This marks the first time the University will represent the UK in Washington, DC.
The Law School’s Jessup coaches Harikrishna Palaniappan and Matilde Masetti Placci said: “We are incredibly proud of these historic results. Having both competed in the world rounds of Jessup, we understand particularly well the sheer effort and skills it takes to get to Washington, DC. These students have been working tirelessly since October 2023 and, in the case of the LLB students, since May 2023. Finally, the University of Edinburgh will be representing the UK for the first time in its history. Hopefully, this is the beginning of a strong international mooting tradition at the University.”
Come along, support mooting at the Law School, and see the 2024 Jessup team perform in front of a three-judge panel!
This will be followed by a drinks reception and an opportunity to network with attendees.
All proceeds from this event will contribute towards future mooting activities at the Edinburgh Law School.
