Professor Gerry Simpson (LSE) will be coming to Edinburgh to deliver a seminar he has titled ‘International Law and the Art of the Deal’ where he will discuss his own research and offer insight and advice on how to embark on and undertake large research projects.

During the seminar, Prof Simpson will speak about two projects he is on the point of completing. The first is a juridical history of the Cold War probably entitled Rival Legalities: International Law and the Cold War. This is an academic book to be published by Cambridge University Press next year. The second is a memoirish mediation on my experience of nuclearism growing up in Caithness and confronting the daily possibility of planetary extinction. It is called How I Learned Not to Live with the Bomb: My Nuclear Family at the End of the Earth. The idea is to speak about these books (one co-authored and scholarly, the other personal and literary) as exercises in genre or, indeed, in mixing genres.

Professor Simpson is particularly keen on engaging with PhD students and early career researchers at the seminar and is happy to take questions and discuss his/your work and broader research interests.
