The Edinburgh Centre for Constitutional Law is delighted to host a Scottish Public Law Group event on “A Human Rights Based Approach: Theory and Practice”.

Speakers
Kasey McCall-Smith, Professor of International Law and Human Rights, will chair a panel of distinguished academics and practitioners, who will explore the application of ‘human rights-based approaches’ in public law and public services in Scotland.

Colm O’Cinneide is a Professor of Constitutional and Human Rights Law at University College London and a leading author in both Constitutional and Human Rights law. He has advised the Joint Committee on Human Rights at the UK Parliament and previously served as a member of the European Committee on Social Rights of the Council of Europe.

Simon Halliday is a Professor of Socio-Legal Studies at the University of Strathclyde. His work centres on the themes of administrative justice and legal culture, and he has recently conducted research on the Scottish Social Security system, observing the implementation of the ‘human rights-based principles’ embedded in the Social Security (Scotland) Act 2018.

Susanne Tanner KC has an extensive practice in Scottish public law, including through chairing independent investigations and reviews, involvement in various public inquiries and sitting as a tribunal judge. Her contribution will reflect upon the human rights and trauma informed approaches taken across a range of such settings.
