Garland’s Punishment and Modern Society @ 30 (+2)

A one day workshop

David Garland’s Punishment and Modern Society is one of the most influential books in the development of contemporary punishment and society studies. It both applied the resources of classical social theory to the study of the penal field in a more synoptic way than had previously been attempted, and brought neglected questions of the position of punishment in cultural representations and the emotional lives of citizens more sharply into view.

This workshop (originally planned for the 30th anniversary of the book’s publication, but postponed because of Covid19 lockdowns) celebrates, assesses and interrogates its legacies. Participants will reflect upon the influence of the book, consider the convulsive change that has occurred across the penal field over the last thirty years, and look to the futures of punishment and penal politics globally in the next three decades.

Contributors include – Lesley McAra, Vanessa Barker, Joshua Page, Lindsay Farmer, Ignacio Gonzalez, Rene van Swaaningen, Margaret Malloch, Bill Munro, Milena Tripkovic, Louise Brangan, Francesca Soliman, Richard Jones, Richard Sparks and David Garland
