Join us for the inaugural event of the Edinburgh Private International Law Hub!
Topic: The Scottish Legacy in Private International Law
The Private International Law Hub is a new initiative within the Edinburgh Law School’s community aiming to create a network of scholars interested in private international law and facilitate discussion. Our first session will take the form of a reading group and will feature an informal discussion. Together we will explore the most influential contribution of Scotland to private international law, the doctrine of forum non conveniens.
Readings to be discussed:
Ardavan Arzandeh (2017) The origins of the Scottish forum non conveniens doctrine, Journal of Private International Law, 13:1, 130-151, DOI: 10.1080/17441048.2017.1303044
Michiel Poesen (2025) A Scots perspective on forum non conveniens in business and human rights litigation: Hugh Campbell KC v James Finlay (Kenya) Ltd, Journal of Private International Law, 21:1, 135-152, DOI: 10.1080/17441048.2025.2479277
The papers will be discussed along with two landmark Scottish forum non conveniens cases, Sim v Robinow (1892) 19 R. 665 and Campbell v James Finlay (Kenya) Ltd [2023] CSIH 39. The session will open with a brief presentation of these papers, followed by an open discussion.
Registration is strongly encouraged, though everyone is welcome to drop in provided room capacity allows!
