The University of Edinburgh Criminology Reading Group Seminar Series 2020/2021 presents:

Atrocity Crimes Perpetrators, Judicial Response, and Enforcement of Sentences in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Mirza Buljubašić, Faculty of Criminal Justice, Criminology and Security Studies, University of Sarajevo

About the seminar
Existing research on atrocity crime perpetrators is predominantly theoretical and generic. Exploration of defendant-related and crime-related characteristics of perpetrators can provide an empirical basis for further research and a better understanding of the nature of atrocity crimes and of criminal justice after atrocities. Based on original quantitative data, this presentation will provide a systematic comparative overview of all perpetrators convicted of atrocity crimes by the courts in Bosnia and Herzegovina and by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. A brief chronology of the war and the judicial response following the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina will be presented. Drawing on qualitative insights from Bosnian prison the presentation will end with a discussion on enforcement of sentences, in particular rehabilitation of atrocity crime perpetrators. For more information and background context before the event, please see article https://doi.org/10.1163/15718123-01901004.

Mirza Buljubašić is Assistant of Criminology at the Faculty of Criminal Justice, Criminology and Security Studies at the University of Sarajevo. He received his MA in Criminology, MA in Criminal Law and MA in Security Studies (all with honours) at the University of Sarajevo. Mirza previously worked as a research supervisor and researcher at local and international organisations dealing with atrocity crimes, organised crime, radicalism and extremism.
