As part of the Law, Power and Political Economy Seminar Series, Sandeep Vaheesan will be discussing his book, Democracy in Power: A History of Electrification in the United States (University of Chicago Press 2024).
Democracy in Power examines the past, present, and promise of rural electric cooperatives and publicly owned utilities such as the Tennessee Valley Authority. The book shows that the path to accountability in the United States’ power sector was beset by bureaucratic challenges and fierce private resistance. Through a detailed and critical examination of this evolution, the book offers a blueprint for a publicly led and managed path to decarbonization.
Sandeep is Legal Director of the Open Markets Institute, where he leads its legal advocacy and research work. Previously, he worked at the US Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the American Antitrust Institute. The event will be chaired by Dr Andrew McLean, Lecturer of Law & Political Economy and coordinator of the Law, Power and Political Economy Seminar Series.
