Prof David Garland Arthur T. Vanderbilt Professor of Law, Professor of Sociology (NYU) and Professorial Fellow in Criminology (Edinburgh)
David Garland is a Professorial Fellow of Edinburgh Law School, where he taught from 1979 to 1997 and where he was previously an LLB and PhD student. He is also Arthur T Vanderbilt Professor of Law and Professor of Sociology at New York University. He is the author of several books, among them, Punishment and Modern Society (1990); The Culture of Control (2001); and The Welfare State (2016). He is currently at work on a book entitled Roots of Injustice: The Structural Sources of America’s Penal State.
