About the seminar
In 2017, the Scottish Government commissioned the largest programme of mock jury research ever carried out in the United Kingdom, examining the effects of the three unique features of the Scottish jury system - the 15-member jury, the not proven verdict and simple majority decision making. That project, which was carried out by Ipsos MORI Scotland, ourselves and Vanessa Munro (Warwick) reported in late 2019. In this seminar, we will discuss the methodological choices underpinning the research, the findings, and their implications for ongoing debates about the future of the Scottish jury system and other aspects of the criminal justice process such as the corroboration rule and concerns about jury deliberations in rape cases.
