The Crime, Justice & Society Seminar Series presents
Queer Spaces and Exclusion
Dr Ben Colliver
About the event
Queer spaces have often been associated with transgressing social norms and providing a counter-space to dominant, heteronormative public spaces. However, this is often discussed using a single-axis framework in which sexuality is prioritised, overshadowing the complexities of human identity. This has resulted in a significant amount of research into the lives of LGBTQ+ people being dominated by the experiences of gay, white men. Through an analysis of Birmingham's Gay Village, this presentation will argue that mainstream queer spaces uphold and perpetuate white, patriarchal norms.
