An opportunity to engage with a senior UK civil servant about his career in international law. Tom Goodwin is a senior UK trade policy expert and diplomat with over 30 years of experience in international trade, law, and diplomacy. Over the past decade, Tom has played a leading role in shaping the UK’s multilateral trade strategy. As First Secretary at the UK Mission in Geneva since 2023, he leads on trade in goods, subsidies, safeguards, and anti-dumping, representing the UK in key WTO negotiations and committees. Prior to this, Tom served as Assistant Director for WTO policy at the Department for International Trade, where he helped build the UK’s post-Brexit multilateral trade framework. His earlier diplomatic postings include Geneva, Washington, and Tokyo, with a strong focus on WTO affairs, intellectual property, and trade law. Tom brings a deep understanding of global trade rules, a collaborative approach to diplomacy, and a commitment to fair and rules-based international commerce.
