This year’s lecture, ‘Looking Back, Thinking Ahead’ will be a conversation between Professor David Edward and Professor Jo Shaw on the past, present and future of the relationship between the United Kingdom and the European Union, and will mark the 50th Anniversary of UK, Irish, and Danish Accession to the EEC.

About the Speakers 

Professor Sir David Edward succeeded Professor JDB Mitchell as the second holder of the Salvesen Chair of European Institutions from 1985 to 1989, when he left for Luxembourg to take up a position as a Judge at, first, the then Court of First Instance (now General Court, 1989-1992) and, thereafter, at the European Court of Justice (1992-2004).

Professor Jo Shaw has held the Salvesen Chair of European Institutions in the School of Law since January 2005. Since 2018, she has also held a part time visiting position in the New Social Research programme of Tampere University in Finland. She is also co-Director of the Global Citizenship Observatory. Her current work builds on research previously funded by the European Research Council and the Nuffield Foundation.
