Niamh Hargan studied Common and Civil Law with French at Queen’s University Belfast, followed by an LLM in Innovation, Technology and the Law at the University of Edinburgh. She trained at a commercial law firm, qualifying as a solicitor in 2015. Upon her move to a boutique entertainment law firm, she was admitted to the New York bar in 2017. She was made a partner at her firm in 2022.
Niamh continues to practice exclusively in the area of film/ TV law, and her primary responsibility is in pre-clearance of films and television shows (assessing them for issues such as defamation, copyright infringement, invasion of privacy, and emotional distress). Some recent projects in which she has been involved include Beckham, Drive To Survive and Nothing Compares.
In 2022, Niamh’s debut novel, Twelve Days in May, was published by HarperCollins. Her second novel, The Break-Up Clause, followed in 2023 and has been optioned for television adaptation. She is presently working on a third novel, plus an additional original screen project.
This event will take a Q&A format, and in conversation with Edinburgh Law School's Dr Smita Kheria, Niamh will discuss her career path, including passing the New York bar, and her current role as an entertainment lawyer working on the pre-clearance of films and television shows. Niamh will also speak about becoming an author, and how the skills developed during legal study and practice helped writing fiction novels.
This is a chance to hear what it is really like to be an entertainment lawyer, and learn more about transferable legal skills.
