Alumni Perspectives – Niamh Hargan, Entertainment Lawyer

Niamh Hargan studied Common and Civil Law with French at Queen’s University Belfast, followed by an LLM in Innovation, Technology and the Law at the University of Edinburgh. She trained at a commercial law firm, qualifying as a solicitor in 2015. Upon her move to a boutique entertainment law firm, she was admitted to the New York bar in 2017. She continues to practice exclusively in the area of film/ tv law, and her primary responsibility is in pre-clearance of films and television shows (assessing them for issues such as defamation, copyright infringement, invasion of privacy, and emotional distress). Some recent projects in which she has been involved include Borat 2, Don’t F**k With Cats, and Drive To Survive.

In 2022, Niamh achieved one of her goals of becoming a published author with her debut novel Twelve Days in May.  Her next novel, The Break-Up Clause, will be publish June 2023.

Event Details

In this presentation, Niamh will discuss her career path, including passing the New York bar, and her current role as an entertainment lawyer working on the pre-clearance of films and television shows.  Niamh will also speak about becoming an author, and how the skills developed during legal study and practice helped writing fiction novels.

This is a chance to hear what is it really like to be an entertainment lawyer, and learn more about transferable legal skills.
