The Scottish Public Law Group and the Edinburgh Centre for Constitutional Law are delighted to invite you to an evening seminar on ‘Addressing the Climate Emergency: the Role of Scots, UK and International Law’.
This free event will take place in the Usha Kasera Lecture Theatre, Old College, University of Edinburgh, South Bridge, Edinburgh, EH8 9YL on Monday 28th October 2019 and will attract 1.5 hours of CPD.
The Scottish First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, declared a climate emergency in her speech to the SNP conference this year, and vowed that Scotland would lead by example in working to limit damage to the environment. This followed weeks of strikes by school pupils and protests by Extinction Rebellion protesters targeting both the UK and Scottish parliaments, demanding bold and urgent action at the devolved, UK and international levels, in the face of escalating climate impacts.
The event will reflect on the meaning of the declaration of a climate emergency and what role law (devolved, UK, supra-national and international) plays in the response to that emergency.
We will hear from:
• Professor Colin Reid, University of Dundee, will address the role of Scots and UK law, including the impact of Brexit.
• Mr Navraj Singh Ghaleigh, University of Edinburgh, will discuss the role of international law and transnational litigation.
• Dr Annalisa Savaresi, University of Stirling, will speak about the role of human rights law.
The event will be chaired by Hannah Ross, solicitor, the City of Edinburgh Council.
Registration is from 17:15. The talks will start at 17:30 and will conclude at 19:00 and will be followed by a drinks reception.
