Student stories: Ottavia Soldina

Ottavia, a 4th year Law and International Relations student shares the impact that receiving a Career Development Scholarship has had for her. She explains how the scholarship helped relieve financial concerns to allow her to take part in a summer school at the University of Oxford and has help her choose a future career path.

I'm  Ottavia Soldina. I'm a fourth  year law and international relations students at the University  of  Edinburgh, and I will be talking about the Ewen Travel Summer School  scholarship and the The White and Case Career Development Scholarship, which enabled me to attend the International Human Rights Law Summer School at the University of Oxford.

So, first of all, I think that applying and then winning the scholarship relieved me from financial concerns to attend the University of Oxford Summer School and also enabled me to attend a summer school which enriched my experience and made me gain knowledge that I can apply to my studies at Edinburgh.

So, it made me realise that I wanted to pursue a career either in international human rights law or international humanitarian law, and therefore, that I want to apply to a master's in international law.

So, as I said before, it made me not stress and worry about financial concerns. And also, without the funding, I wouldn't have been able to attend the summer school.

So I think it's really important for alumni and other individuals to invest in scholarships because it enables students at the law school to enrich their knowledge and therefore have a clearer understanding of what they want to do in the future. I would definitely thank them for enabling me to win the scholarship because without it, I wouldn't have been able to understand what I really want to pursue in the future.
