Welcome

Edinburgh, Scotland, UKWelcome to Edinburgh Law School, one of the leading law schools in the UK. The aim of these pages is to give you an insight into what it's like to study law at the University of Edinburgh, the different law degrees it's possible to take, and the exciting careers ahead.

Studying law at university is an interesting and rewarding experience, and one that will stand you in good stead no matter whether you want to become a professional lawyer or follow one of the numerous other careers possible. Learning about the law involves learning the general principles underlying different areas of law, and learning how to apply them to specific situations and the facts of different cases. It also involves developing analytical reasoning skills, legal research skills, and verbal and written expression skills so that you can express your analysis and arguments clearly, accurately and persuasively.

Careers open to law graduates from Edinburgh include the Scottish legal profession (solicitor or advocate), but also, with a suitable subsequent conversion course offered elsewhere, the English or other legal professions. Of course, the law degree is also an excellent entry point into any number of other professions, including business, finance, journalism, politics, academia, non-governmental organisations, and the civil service.

Edinburgh Law School has a long and distinguished reputation, but also continues to explore the cutting-edge of legal research. Our law degrees are highly respected, not just in Scotland but worldwide, and our Alumni have enjoyed success around the globe. We hope you will choose to join us, and we look forward to welcoming you to Edinburgh.
