In February, Professor Burkhard Schafer gave the keynote address at the 2024 Brazil-UK AI Governance Summit.  The event’s theme this year was titled ‘Beyond the Algorithm: Building a Responsible Future’, and it brought together professionals, academics, industry representatives, civil society members, regulators, economists, and legal experts to discuss a future of ethical AI and the global regulatory and social challenges this can bring.

Professor Schafer’s address was based on his research carried out at Edinburgh Law School as part of the governance node of the Trustworthy Autonomous Systems network. In his talk, he used the example of automated legal translation to contrast the EU, US, and UK approaches to the regulation of legal technology.

Notably, two of the summit’s organisers are Edinburgh Law School alumni, Guilherme Philippi (Senior Counsel at Uber Brazil) and Aline Fachinetti (Data Protection Manager at Edenred), who graduated with an LLM in Innovation, Technology and the Law in 2021 and 2022, respectively. Their teams were crucial to bringing this event together.

The summit was made possible with the support of CheveningUNESCO, and Associação Brasileira das Empresas de Software (ABES) at KPMG Brazil
