Welcome to the Europa Institute Webpages

The Europa Institute at the University of Edinburgh is one of the most active and longest-established specialist centres of advanced study on European integration in the United Kingdom and Europe. Our Institute brings together world-class scholars on EU law, politics and policy as well as supporting a vibrant community of early career research fellows and postgraduate students. We emphasise research, teaching and the exchange of ideas with the wider world. The collective impact of our work in these areas ensures that the Europa Institute occupies a central, strategic position in both national and international networks of scholars working on the EU and provides a unique environment in Scotland’s capital city to explore the key issues facing Europe today.

To keep up to date with changes at the Europa Institute, please see our News and Forthcoming Events and Activities pages, which are regularly updated. They carry details of events, new appointments and opportunities, and new projects. There is also a summary of activities for the previous year and an archive of earlier events.

Europa Institute Mission Statement

Founded in 1968 the Europa Institute is a multi-disciplinary teaching and research centre within the University of Edinburgh devoted to the independent study of the laws, policies and governance and institutions of the European Union. The Europa Institute has been designated a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence.

The purpose of the Europa Institute is to facilitate academic analysis, teaching and debate of the history and process of European Integration with specific reference to the policies and institutions of the European Union and its member states.

The Europa Institute is a pre-eminent centre for the study of the European Union and enjoys close collaborations with leading research scholars in European Union Studies and practitioners from across the world.

The Europa Institute organises a range of seminars, conferences and lectures on themes pertaining to European Integration. While heavily focused on academic matters, the Europa Institute also provides a platform for policy makers and officials to deliver keynote lectures of interest to a wider public.
