View my full research profileThe Director of Student Experience (DSE) is tasked with creating a vibrant and distinctive culture for entry to, and learning at, Edinburgh Law School. DSE works with students and staff across a whole range of projects, including the Law Peer Assisted Learning Scheme (LawPALS) and all of our Widening Participation work with under-represented groups of applicants and students. Lindsay's work spans the entire journey from engagement as young as primary school, to entry and transition to, and through, the law degree and beyond graduation.
Lindsay has expertise in widening participation into legal education and the legal profession in Scotland. She has a background in access to, transition into, and progression through university, and has experience working in both undergraduate admissions and Lothians Equal Access Programme for Schools (LEAPS).
As Education Manager at The Society of Writers to Her Majesty’s Signet (The WS Society) from 2004 - 2007, Lindsay expanded her interest in legal education, legal practice and the Scottish legal practice landscape, the various routes into the profession and the relationship between all of these.
Lindsay’s undergraduate degree is law ((Edinburgh) Napier University) and she also holds a Postgraduate Certificate in University Teaching from The University of Edinburgh. Lindsay is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and is currently working towards Senior Fellowship.
Since joining Edinburgh Law School in May 2007, Lindsay has run countless law workshops for primary and secondary school pupils, and college students. DSE champions under-represented students at all stages of their journey to and with us, and works with many colleagues across the university to ensure the voices and experiences of students are being lifted and heard where they need to be.
We want all students' experiences with us to be the best they can possibly be, and Lindsay sits on many law school committees (Undergraduate Studies, Student Staff Liaison, Special Circumstances, Athena Swan and more) with an aim of furthering this aspiration. Community, confidence and belonging are three pillars of Lindsay's work and she works closely with colleagues in the school and in the legal profession to develop and support initiatives that underpin this ethos.
Lindsay is a Personal Tutor and is also currently one of two Coordinators of (Disability) Adjustment.
Widening Participation (WP)
The University is committed to equality of opportunity and to admit students from all backgrounds with the ability and potential to benefit from, and succeed in, its undergraduate programmes of study. Widening participation work aims to address the discrepancies between different groups in the take-up of higher education opportunities. Edinburgh Law School has a wide-ranging programme of widening participation activity from Primary School to final years of Secondary School and beyond. We work as part of the Reach: Edinburgh team and run workshops in support of almost all WP initiatives the university runs or is involved with, including the Primary and Early Secondary Years initiative, YourEd, and Sutton Trust Summer School.
Paramount within this work is providing support for all our LLB students once on-course and this is done through programmes such as the School's Peer Assisted Learning Scheme, LawPALS, which aims to ease social and academic transition into law school.
