Gail Lythgoe teaches and researches global law and governance at the University of Edinburgh, where she is leading the delivery of Edinburgh’s new Global Law LLB. Before joining Edinburgh Law School, Gail taught international law and international relations at the Universities of Manchester and St Andrews. She has guest taught at Sciences Po, Paris, and Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies, Pisa. Gail has studied law at the Universities of Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Singapore (National University of Singapore) and was a visiting researcher at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity, Göttingen, Germany. Gail is the Law School’s Gender and Sex Champion, serves on the Decolonisation Working Group, and co-leads on Employability for Edinburgh Law School. She co-convenes the careers working group for the Law Schools Global League and co-directs the Leiden-Edinburgh Global Law Summer School. Gail co-leads the Working Group on Gender Parity of the International Court of Justice, is on the Management Committee of the Scottish Council for Global Affairs, and is a member of the Accountability Unit Legal Team. 

Gail’s ‘groundbreaking' monograph, The Rebirth of Territory, came out with Cambridge University Press in 2024. 

Gail works on a wide range of issues, including public and private international law, global law, global governance, social and legal theory, international organizations, security, legal tech, global health, and critical geography. Gail welcomes proposals for postgraduate research on this topics.
