Professor Sharon Cowan

On Sunday 12 November, Professor Sharon Cowan chaired the event titled ‘Free to Decide: Reproductive Rights for All’. This event was part of the 2023 Radical Book Fair that took place in Edinburgh from 9 to 12 November 2023.

Professor Cowan chaired the conversation between authors Sian Norris, Alice Spawls, and Kirsty Logan who spoke and reflected on what the landscape of reproductive rights looks like today and where the most urgent actions are needed. When asked about chairing this event, Professor Cowan said: “Edinburgh's Radical Book Fair hosted by Lighthouse Books is an opportunity to meet researchers, journalists, and other writers outwith the academy, who are doing ground-breaking work in crucial areas like reproductive justice, and I was thrilled to be able to chair this event.”

Additionally, in October Professor Cowan co-authored a post for the Social & Legal Studies blog with Ben Collier, lecturer at the University of Edinburgh’s School of Social and Political Science. Titled ‘Defining and Collecting Sex/Gender Data in the Census: Queer Conflicts, Concept Capture, and Category Co-option’, this post explored the power and harm at play during data collection practices of sex and gender in the current UK and Scottish context.
