In memoriam: Lord Selkirk of Douglas and Marlene Gilchrist

Wed 24 January 2024

Old College Quad

It is with great sadness that Edinburgh Law School writes about the passing of esteemed community members Lord Selkirk of Douglas and Marlene Gilchrist.

Lord Selkirk of Douglas graduated from Edinburgh Law School in 1967 with an LLB in Scots Law. Through the Selkirk Charitable Trust, he donated to the School in support of a student bursary and the Law Library. In addition to providing resources for the Law Library, this gift provided residential support for a postgraduate student from Afghanistan while undertaking an LLM in Human Rights.

Marlene Gilchrist graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1967 with an MA in Arts. She established the Gilchrist Prize Award endowment in 1997 in memory of her father and mother, Chic and Eileen Gilchrist. The Gilchrist Prize is awarded to the student with the best performance in the Honours course in International Law. Marlene’s donations also sponsored some of Edinburgh Law School’s Career Developmental Scholarships.

Edinburgh Law School’s sincere condolences are with the Douglas-Hamilton and Gilchrist families.
