Edinburgh law students take 3rd place in the UK Student Mediation Competition 2020
Tue 4 February 2020
On Friday 24 and Saturday 25 January, students of the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice Anna Bruce, Simon Roudh, and Rebecca Stafford represented Edinburgh Law School at the UK Student Mediation Competition, hosted this year by Glasgow University.
After three mediation rounds, the team were placed 3rd in the overall rankings with team member Rebecca Stafford taking 3rd place in the individual mediator competition.
Rebecca Samaras, who is a member of the Competition Coordinating Committee and judge at the event, said: “This is an excellent achievement. The team had no experience of mediation before entering the competition and very limited training in the run-up to the event. They are a credit to the School and to the legal profession. My thanks to mediator, Pamela Lyall, for giving up so much of her time to coach the team."
Simon Roudh, one of the team members, said after the event: “With little training or practice of mediation, and us only being told on Tuesday we were selected to represent the University of Edinburgh Law School, I am pleased to announce yesterday we won 3rd place (and best Scottish Team) in the UK Student Mediation Competition 2020! This competition has really opened my eyes to the process of mediation and all its benefits, and has me seriously considering mediation as a principal approach to dispute resolution. I have come to believe mediation is a skill that you can apply every day to your personal and professional life, and I am excited to see the progress of mediation in Scotland in respect of the law."
