In 1948, Italy introduced the principle of equal pay for men and women into its Constitution (Article 37), ahead of most other European countries. In 1957 the European Economic Community included the same principle in the Treaty of Rome (Article 119). The aim of this presentation is to understand why Italy was the first Member State to introduce such a principle, by analysing the historical and cultural context in which the first equal pay claims were born, and secondly to understand how the subsequent EEC legislation interacted with the existing national rules.
