Awards and Scholarships for Undergraduate Students

For the 2012/13 academic session the school is able to offer the following awards and scholarships:

Gill Hollis Tercentenary Awards 2012
Applications are invited for the Gill Hollis Tercentenary Awards 2012. The School is delighted to be able to extend this exciting opportunity to its students as a result of the generosity of Mrs Hollis (LLB, 1987).

The Awards primarily fund travel and subsistence for;
  • Edinburgh LLB students graduating this year; and
  • Edinburgh LLB graduates now enrolled on further programmes of taught study at Edinburgh and graduating this year, undertaking research or personal development projects subsequent to graduation.
Applications for an award should be submitted by email to Elizabeth Mack (elizabeth.mack@ed.ac.uk) no later than 18 May 2012.

Applications must include:
  •  Details of the proposed activity, including;
    • The time frame (if the activity is to be undertaken under the auspices of an organisation, please provide either a URL for the panel's further information, or concise documentation - i.e. web page printouts or promotional materials describing the framework within which the activity would take place);
    • An indication of how the activity would build both on previous interests and towards future activities;
    • The total costs of the activity and the amount being requested. Please include details here of any other sources of funding that are secured or are being sought.
    • The name and contact details of a referee (i.e. a Director of Studies, course organiser or employer)

Margaret Malloch Scholarships

Applications are invited for the above Scholarships (two) from students who have completed their first year of study in the School who are already in possession of a first degree of this or another University and who are not in receipt of a full Education Authority Award or other similar means of financial support e.g. the Carnegie Trust, University Hardship Bursary.

One Scholarship of £1,750 will be awarded to the applicant with the best academic record in the subjects which he or she has taken in 2011-2012 whilst the award of the other Scholarship of £1,750 will be based on financial need.

Application forms are available from and should be submitted to the Law School Reception not later than 29 June 2012.

Vans Dunlop Scholarship

One Vans Dunlop Scholarship of £1000 (or such lesser sum as the School of Law may recommend) for one year (renewable for one further year) may be awarded in 2012 to a candidate who, within three years immediately prior to the date of the award, has passed all the examinations required for graduation in Law; the award may be made by the Senatus on recommendation by the School of Law. The holder must, during his tenure, undertake a course of advanced study in Law approved by the School, details of which should be given wherever possible. No other employment or course of study may be undertaken except with the consent of the School.

Lorimer Scholarship in International Law

The above Scholarship may be awarded in 2012 to a student who, within the two years immediately before the award is made, has successfully completed an examination in one of the following subjects for any degree in the University:

International Law
International Legal Order of the Environment and World Economy
EC Substantive Law
European Institutions
International Private Law

Preference will be given to a candidate for a degree in Law.

The Scholarship, amounting to £500, may be awarded for any course of study or research approved by the School.

The holder of the Scholarship will be expected to submit a brief report in writing to the School after the conclusion of the course of study or programme of research.

Applications should be submitted on a form obtainable from the Law School Reception, giving details of the course or proposed research and an estimate of the expense, by 29 June 2012.

Dalgety Scholarship

One Harry Dalgety Scholarship of £1000 (or such lesser sum as the School of Law may recommend) for one year (renewable for one further year) may be awarded in 2012 to a student who is completing his degree course in 2012 and who undertakes to proceed to postgraduate research or advanced study approved by the School of Law, details of which should be given whenever possible. The award shall be made by the Senatus on a recommendation made by the School of Law after considering the record of candidates during their degree course.
