A Strong PhD cohort The Scottish Centre for International Law continues to have a strong cohort of PhD students undertaking research in a variety of fields of international law. Several of our research students hold scholarships from the AHRC, the University of Edinburgh, or other sources. Many of our research students go on to pursue careers in law schools around the world or to work for governments or international organizations. Research topics chosen by international law PhD students broadly reflect the interests of members of staff. In particular, several students have undertaken research topics closely linked to Professor Boyle’s current work on international law-making. Another group of students are building on Professor Gilmore’s work on transnational crime. A full list of PhD students and their research topics can be found on the research students page of the School of Law website. An Active Research Culture Greatly assisted by improvements in the School’s provision of research space for postgraduates, an active research culture has developed among the international law students. A Discussion Group on International Law organized by PhD students functions as an informal space where students can share their research ideas and interests with one another and with members of the academic staff. The format includes both presentations by students and staff on their own research topics as well as more general debates on contemporary issues in international law. The Centre’s various activities provide not only an opportunity to share academic ideas but also to socialize with other students with similar interests. 2006 Research Student Symposium on International Law In 2006 the Centre’s research students organised a very successful Research Student Symposium on International Law. The Symposium was intended to provide an opportunity for research students from across the country with an interest in public international law to present their research to an audience of students and academics working in the same field. Funding was obtained from the Collaborative Research Training Scheme of the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the School of Law. Students attended from Cambridge, Essex, Oxford, Dundee, Manchester, Aberdeen and Edinburgh. Several members of staff participated in the event by chairing sessions and providing feedback on the student’s presentations. For further details on the Research Student Symposium on International Law held in May 2006, you can download the Symposium Guide and Abstracts More Information If you are interested in undertaking postgraduate research in international law at Edinburgh Law School, you can find further information on the postgraduate pages of the School of Law website or you can email Professor Bill Gilmore.
