Fiesta of Impact

Fiesta of Impact – Celebrating our Contribution to Social Progress

Edinburgh Law School held a 'Fiesta of Impact' on 18 February 2016 to celebrate its contribution to social progress and to bring together academics and those who help formulate and implement changes in law and policy.

The event, the first of its kind to be held at the School, showcased existing and emerging changes in society, law, policy, and practice to which the Law School's research has contributed.

The event aimed to inspire and inform future research impact while highlighting how research can be translated into social change by bringing together academics from the School and members of public and third sector agencies

Law School academics were joined by guests including representatives from Beyond Borders, COSLA, NHS, Relationships Scotland, the Scottish Council for Refugees, the Scottish Law Commission, the Scottish Parliament, the Scottish Prison Service, Scottish Women’s Aid, Volunteer Glasgow, independent Inspectorates, and the local consular community.

The 90 attendees listened to short talks on the theme of research impact and the relationship between researchers and research users from speakers Graeme Laurie and Jan Pospisil (School of Law) and Christina Boswell (School of Social and Political Science). An open networking reception followed with displays showing how the School makes a difference in a range of areas of law and policy. Lively discussions ensued about how researchers and those who formulate and implement law and policy might work in ways which better produce positive social outcomes.

Banners displaying some of Edinburgh Law School's key contributions to change were on display at the events and pdf versions of them can be downloaded here.

As part of the University of Edinburgh's Innovative Learning Week, PhD, LLM and MSc students attending the Fiesta also attended a workshop on the theme of research impact and how it relates to their own projects and career plans.

The event was supported by the University of Edinburgh Innovative Initiative Grant and by funds from the University’s Innovative Learning Week.
