Research is central to the Law School's activities, with our staff actively
engaged in research across a wide range of legal and socio-legal areas. The UK's 2008 Research Assessment Exercise rated the Law School 1st in Scotland in 2008, and a
'5' in 2001. The Law School also has a
strong international reputation for high quality research. As you will see from
our website, our academic staff has produced numerous books, articles and other
scholarly publications. Our research expertise informs our programmes of
teaching and learning, meaning that students learn in a research-active
environment, at an institution with a strong research reputation, and on
programmes designed to lead them into exploring the key research issues in each
field. Both undergraduate and taught postgraduate students are encouraged to
attend research seminars relating to their studies, and research and write a
dissertation in a topic of particular interest to them. The School's doctoral
research students form an important part of our research community, and are
engaged in cutting-edge research in their respective fields.

Academic Staff and Research Students
Edinburgh Law School academic staff and
research students conduct research
across many research areas. Our web pages are designed to help you identify
research clusters within the School - when viewing an academic staff member's web
page, just follow the right-hand menu to find other of our academics researching
in that area. We welcome applications from prospective research students
throughout the academic year. For more information on our doctoral research
programme, and on the many School of Law research studentships and University
funding opportunities available, see our Postgraduate Prospectus.
Research Centres, Projects and Grants
Several Research Centres and Projects are located within the Law School,
including the Centre for Studies in Intellectual Property and Technology Law,
the Europa Institute, and the
Edinburgh Study of Youth Transitions and Crime.
Law School staff have been successful in obtaining sizeable research grant
awards.
The Law School and its Research Centres are active in organising frequent
research events, such as guest lectures, research seminars and conferences. See
our Events web pages for details of forthcoming events as well as an extensive
archive of past events.
Libraries and Online Research Resources
Old College, the home of the Law School, also houses the
Law and Europa
Library, with its extensive collection of legal, criminological and European
materials. In addition to this research resource, the Main Library is just five
minutes' walk away, as is the National Library of Scotland. As well as these
libraries, the Law School provides access to its staff and students to key
online legal research resources such as LexisNexis, Westlaw and online
electronic versions of journals.
We welcome applications from prospective Visiting Academics who
wish to spend a period of time at Edinburgh Law School in order to conduct
research and participate in our research community and activities. If you would
like to apply to visit the School of Law, please consult the Visiting Academics page on our Vistors website.
Postgraduate students who are interested in visiting the School of Law should consult the Visiting Student Programme page on our online prospectus.
