LLM in Law and Chinese
Introduction to the Programme
This two-year LLM in Law and Chinese provides students with a unique opportunity to study the law at LLM level while at the same time receiving intensive training in Modern Standard Chinese language (Mandarin). This innovative programme is jointly coordinated between the School of Law and the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures at the University of Edinburgh and ran for the first time in September 2011. Students will spend the first year of the programme in Edinburgh studying law and beginning their Chinese language training. In the summer, and for the first semester of the second year, they will develop their language skills and appreciation of Chinese culture through an Approved Residence Abroad scheme at a prestigious Chinese University. Students will return to Edinburgh in the second semester of the second year where they will complete their language training and additional courses in law before (subject to satisfactory completion of the coursework) embarking on a supervised dissertation in law. Successful students will graduate with full Masters-level training in law as well as a solid grounding in Chinese language.
Students will be able to select from a broad range of LLM offerings in the School of Law to develop general or specific areas of legal expertise. Courses are taught by leading experts in their fields (including: commercial law, European law, intellectual property law, legal philosophy and private law). Students can graduate either with the LLM in Law and Chinese or, subject to taking sufficient Law courses in the relevant specialism, the LLM in Commercial Law and Chinese, the LLM in Intellectual Property Law and Chinese or the LLM in International Law and Chinese.
