Introduction to the Programme

As a research centre within the School of Law, the Europa Institute has developed as one of the pre-eminent centres in Britain for the study of the institutions, policies and law of the European Union. To request a brochure about the Europa Institute to be sent to you by post, please email europa@ed.ac.uk with your postal address.

The aim of the LL.M. in European Law, taught primarily by staff working within the Institute, is essentially twofold; first, to provide an established core of European law subjects at an advanced level and, second, to apply and broaden this knowledge via study of specialised optional courses. The programme offered at Edinburgh thus reflects the rapid evolution of contemporary European law and, against the backdrop of international law more generally, its unique bearing on domestic legal orders.

The interdisciplinary ethos of the Europa Institute also provides a unique environment for advanced study of EU law in its political and economic contexts; we offer courses in the Law School on both policy implications and applied economics, and we have links with courses offered by our colleagues in the School of Social and Political Studies. We also involve legal practictioners and policy-makers working at the highest levels of the development of EU law in our LLM teaching, thereby offering our students a broad range of perspectives on EU law and practice.

What our graduates say ...

"Inspiring classes taught in an international atmosphere and a beautiful city provided me with one of the best years in my life and proved to be a valuable asset in my later job in an international law firm." Sebastian Reinsch, LLM in European Law 2003

"The LLM in European Law has equipped me with skills I need for the European Commission where I am currently working as a trainee: a thorough knowledge of European Law and a broad range of interesting perspectives offered by lawyers and prominent public figures. The opportunity to meet these people combined with the attention students receive from committed and caring academic staff has been a highly valuable experience which can enrich the career/life of any ambitious and intellectually curious person." Mina Andreeva, LLM in European Law 2007

Programme Structure

You may take the LLM in European Law either full-time (over one year) or part-time (over the course of two years).

Students are required to complete 180 credits of study: this includes a dissertation to be submitted at the end of their studies (60 credits). The remaining 120 credits must be made up from taught LLM courses. Each curriculum for an LLM in European Law student will resemble one of the following options:

Option 1
Three full-year courses over two semesters of the academic year, each course carrying 40 credits (i.e. 120 credits)

Option 2
Two 40 credit courses and two 20 credit courses (i.e. 80 credits plus 40 (20+20) credits, = 120 credits)

Option 3
One 40 credit course and four 20 credit courses (i.e. 40 credits plus 80 (4 x 20) credits, =120 credits)

Option 4
Six 20 credit courses (i.e. 6 x 20 credits = 120 credits)
