Studying for a Postgraduate Masters Degree at Edinburgh

A taught Masters degree provides an opportunity for in-depth study of your chosen law or law-related field and combines group teaching with independent research.

The LLM explores central legal questions in their comparative, European and International context as appropriate, delivering transferable skills in legal research and analysis so that our graduates can pursue a broad range of career options with the benefit of this widely recognised qualification from a prestigious international university.

The LLM and MSc degrees offer advanced study of a range of law and law-related subjects, with an opportunity to develop more detailed knowledge, understanding and research skills through pursuing a chosen dissertation topic. As is clear from our curriculum and the structure of our specialised LLM degrees, the LLM and MSc provide an opportunity either to specialise in one particular branch of law or to pursue an advanced legal education over a broader range of subjects.

The LLM and MSc degrees are gained by intensive study over 12 months full-time (see below for part-time options) beginning annually in mid-September and with an expectation of residence in Edinburgh until late August in the following year.

The LLM degree offers an academic, rather than a professional, qualification, and as such does not provide the concentrated study of Scots or English law required for entry to the legal profession.

Part-Time Students

The LLM curriculum is normally arranged so that two-thirds (80 credits) of the required course credits are studied in the first year. The remaining one-third (40 credits) of course credits and dissertation are undertaken in the second year. Part-time MSc students are normally expected to complete four modules (two core and two optional) in the first year and three additional modules (two core and one optional) together with the dissertation in the second year.

Those who wish to take the degree part-time must provide assurances when they apply that they can devote sufficient time to their studies, especially when it is intended that studies are to be combined with full-time employment.
