Life in Edinburgh

Edinburgh is Scotland's capital city and is often voted one of the best places to live in the UK.

With its stunning Georgian and Victorian architecture, and winding medieval streets, it’s easy to see why Edinburgh has been listed as a World Heritage Site. Edinburgh Castle dominates the skyline and is the best known and most visited of our historic buildings.

But the castle is just the start of what Edinburgh has to offer. The National Trust for Scotland and Historic Scotland look after a wealth of properties in the city, all of which are available for you to explore.

Edinburgh has the largest collection of historic buildings, museums, art galleries and theatres of any city in Scotland, and is home to the Scottish Parliament. It is the location for the National Copyright Library of Scotland and has more booksellers per capita than any other city in Britain. In 2004, it was the first city in the world to be named City of Literature by UNESCO. Cultural, arts and science festivals take place throughout the year, and Edinburgh has fantastic green spaces, leisure and sports facilities.

For more information on what's available in Edinburgh, UK, see the Lonely Planet Travel Guide or The List events guide websites. And on top of this, of course, by living in Edinburgh you will be in a great position to enjoy the famous Edinburgh Festivals.

Studying in Edinburgh

The Law School is based in the University of Edinburgh's historic Old College, centrally situated within the city of Edinburgh, just a few minutes' walk from Edinburgh Castle and Princes Street (see Google Maps for our location, and spectacular views of Edinburgh).

Old College is part of the central University campus, and is very close to the Student Union, University Library, and George Square. You'll be studying in one of the best and most interesting areas of the city - in the heart of the Old Town, a vibrant area full of activity.

Edinburgh offers an excellent and wide range of facilities to support your legal studies. The Law Library, based right here in Old College, offers you a superb collection of legal books, journals, law reports, and other research materials. You will have access to the leading electronic legal research resources such as LexisNexis and Westlaw, and electronic access to numerous journals. You will be able to use one of three computer labs here in the Law School or, if you prefer, use wireless access available in the Law Library and almost all of our seminar rooms.

Edinburgh Law School offers a rich programme of visiting speakers and lecturers. All our postgraduate students (LLM, MSc, or PhD) have the opportunity and are encouraged to attend these events, and can thereby benefit from access to a wide variety of international academics and other experts.
