ESRC Collaborative PhD Studentship 2012
Edinburgh Law School is pleased to invite applications for a +3 PhD Studentship, funded by the ESRC, to start in September 2012. The title of the Studentship is
A qualitative longitudinal study of Includem's Transitional Support Programme.
This
research results from collaboration between members of the Scottish Centre for
Crime and Justice Research (www.sccjr.ac.uk)
and Includem (http://www.includem.org/). Includem is a service-providing charity which, in the 11 years of its existence to date,
has developed an international reputation for its work with young people with
especially troubled and chaotic lifestyles. These are ‘young people who face a
lifetime of court, prison, homelessness, broken relationships, drug and alcohol
abuse’ (Includem, 2011: 1). Key features of Includem’s services include not defining any young person out on grounds of excessive difficulty, round-the-clock availability of help and support, and consistency of one to one relationships between workers and young
people. Includem insists upon a commitment to evidence-informed practice,
just as SCCJR is committed to a vision of a civic criminology centering upon the
connectedness of empirical inquiry, theoretical enrichment and practical engagement. This proposal focuses on what is both a key challenge for Includem’s practice, namely how to enable young people to disengage successfully from reliance upon its support after the age of 18, and a major issue for theory and research, namely how progress towards desistance from crime fares in the face of major life transitions and critical events.
Details
