CREATe PhD Studentship

Applications are invited from suitably qualified graduates for a fully sponsored PhD studentship based within the School of Law and the SCRIPT centre at The University of Edinburgh. This three year full-time PhD studentship is offered with a start date of May 2013 or as soon as possible thereafter. The PhD will investigate the relationship between copyright, creators' organisations and business models under the broad research theme of the role played by copyright, whether positive, negative, or neutral, in shaping the real world creative and business activities of creators and performers. This research theme forms part of the work programme of CREATe

The successful candidate will receive an annual stipend of £13,756 per annum and a fee-waiver which will cover the cost of fees at the Home/EU rate.

Details

This is a 3 year PhD studentship, funded by the University of Edinburgh and explicitly linked to a project within CREATe’s current research programme. The CREATe project ‘Creators’ Organizations’ to which this studentship is attached is based in the School of Law and the SCRIPT centre at The University of Edinburgh and led by Dr Smita Kheria. Formal organisations representing creators can play an important role in shaping the economic and social context of creativity for the creators as well as the business models of the relevant industries. As such, this project will involve a study of the labour relations of creativity for members of creators’ organisations in a number of creative sectors using a socio-legal approach, which may include conduct of historical or empirical research. The PhD candidate recruited will be expected to work within this broad scope. The successful candidate will be based in Edinburgh and it is expected that the candidate will be given opportunities to interact with the rest of the CREATe team and its activities.

Ideal candidates will have an undergraduate degree and a masters qualification in Law or other relevant field (such as Socio-legal studies, Economics or Business) and good knowledge of copyright. A Masters qualification in Socio-legal studies or Intellectual property Law is desirable, though not essential.

Research in Intellectual Property Law at Edinburgh Law School is linked to the activities of the prestigious SCRIPT Centre, sponsored by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. SCRIPT Centre is now part of a pioneering initiative to support the growth of the UK’s vital creative industries and arts sector: the RCUK Centre for Copyright and New Business Models in the Creative Economy (CREATe).

CREATe (Creativity, Regulation, Enterprise and Technology) is run by a consortium of seven UK universities led by the University of Glasgow. It is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), and will examine a range of issues relating to new digital technologies with a view to meeting some of the central challenges facing the UK’s creative economy.

Applied Quantitative Methods Network (AQMeN)

PhD Studentship in Criminology

Deadline 31st May 2013

A fully funded PhD studentship in Criminology is available from the School of Law at the University of Edinburgh. This studentship will be attached to the Crime and Victimisation Strand of the Applied Quantitative Methods Network (AQMeN), a multi-disciplinary Research Centre based within the School of Law.

AQMeN is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council to develop a pioneering set of research projects which aim to improve our understanding of current social issues in the UK and provide policy makers and practitioners with robust independent research-based evidence. AQMeN has three primary strands of research: Crime and Victimisation (led by Professor Susan McVie, University of Edinburgh), Education and Social Stratification (led by Dr Cristina Iannelli, University of Edinburgh) and Urban Segmentation and Inequality (led by Professor Gwilym Pryce, University of Glasgow).

The Crime and Victimisation Strand (CVS) will have four main areas of research and applications from prospective students are welcomed for any project that fits within these four substantive areas:

  • explaining change in crime rates and trends over time and within different geographical spaces;
  • exploring the characteristics of those who participate in crime as victims and/or offenders;
  • determining the underlying factors and processes which explain ‘criminal careers’ at the individual and the community level;
  • and evaluating the impact of specific criminal justice policies and interventions.

To qualify for this studentship, the applicant must propose to conduct research which fits within one of these four thematic areas.The primary methodological focus must involve the analysis of existing large-scale survey and/or administrative datasets and the proposal should indicate which statistical techniques are likely to be applied. Applications proposing a mixed methods approach will be considered.

This studentship provides a unique opportunity to work alongside the CVS research team, to receive training in advanced quantitative methods and to disseminate their research findings to a range of audiences, including policy makers and practitioners.

This competition is for a +3 award only, so potential candidates must demonstrate in their application that they already have sufficient training in research methods (in particular quantitative methods) through a postgraduate degree. The student will be funded for three years of research on a topic of their choosing that fits broadly within the research themes outlined above.

Application process: Interested applicants should apply by completing this application form Word Document and return this along with an up to date CV (detailing your educational history, qualifications, training received and any publications/presentations) to pg.law@ed.ac.uk. On your online application, please reference that you are applying for the ‘AQMeN Criminology Studentship’.  The deadline for applications is noon on 31st May 2013.

Selection process: Applications will be evaluated by members of the AQMeN research team and the best applicants (judged in terms of academic merit of the application) will be invited to interview at which they will be expected to elaborate on their research proposals.

Eligibility: The competition is open to students who have completed (or expect to complete by the end of the current academic year) a Masters qualification in Criminology, Sociology, Social Policy or another relevant discipline (including Statistics) from an ESRC recognised outlet.

Full list of ESRC recognised outlets

Funding: The studentship will start in September 2013 and will include an annual maintenance stipend of £12,000 and payment of full-time fees for UK/EU candidates (and fees only equivalent for overseas students). A research allowance of £700 will also be provided. In addition, the student will be provided with a computer and funding to attend relevant national and/or international conferences.
