James Chalmers has been named as one of the first members of the newly created Young Academy of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

The Young Academy is described by the RSE as "a unique opportunity to bring together some of the most able and innovative young academics, entrepreneurs, artists and professionals in Scotland... a platform for the best and most forward-looking people of their generation to develop for themselves a distinctive, coherent and influential 'voice' to address many of the challenging issues facing society."

The first 68 members of the Academy were named on the 5th September 2011. Mr Chalmers is one of two academic lawyers to have been selected (along with Professor Christian Tams of the University of Glasgow). The Academy is to be launched formally in November.
