University of Edinburgh staff, students and dignitaries from across Scotland gathered in the Old College Quad yesterday (26th September) to watch the Ceremony of Installation of HRH The Princess Royal as Chancellor of the University of Edinburgh.

The prestigious ceremony saw HRH the Princess Royal installed as Chancellor by the Vice-Chancellor and University Principal, Sir Timothy O'Shea, after succeeding the role from her father HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, who held the position for 57 years. The Princess Royal gave an inspiring address on the role of Universities and her hopes for the future as Chancellor of the University of Edinburgh.

As part of the ceremony three honorary awards were presented. J.K. Rowling and Mr Hugh Langmuir & Mrs Josseline Langmuir were presented with the awards of Distinction of University Benefactor; and The Right Hon. The Lord Wilson of Tillyorn received the award of Honorary Degree.

After the Installation Ceremony, The Princess Royal opened the beautifully restored Old College Quad with the unveiling of a plaque to be displayed in the Quad. The restoration of the Quad is thanks to the generous private donation of £1 million to ensure the culmination of a project started in the 18th Century. The new Quad boasts an exquisite Clashach stone courtyard with a lawn centre which will be open to University staff and the public. The School of Law is delighted to be located in such a stunning environment, surrounded by such rich University history.
