The first consortium meeting for the MEDIADEM project ‘European Media Policies Revisited: Valuing & Reclaiming Free and Independent Media in Contemporary Democratic Systems’ took place in Athens on the 4/5 June 2010.

The University of Edinburgh is one of the 14 interdisciplinary partner institutions taking part in the research project funded by the European Union, which aims to advance our understanding of how media freedom and independence can be safeguarded in Europe.

The Edinburgh research team, consisting of Dr Rachael Craufurd Smith and Ms. Yolande Stolte, presented two papers at the Athens meeting, including an initial background report on UK media law and policy.  Over its three year life span MEDIADEM will produce a range of monographs, in-depth reports, articles and policy papers.  It will also organise regular workshops and meetings, two of which will be hosted by the University of Edinburgh, involving policy makers, researchers, media professionals, civil society organisations and the public to encourage the widest possible exchange of knowledge on, and engagement with, this important issue.
