Dr Andrew Steven delivered one of the keynote addresses at the recent International Property Law Conference held at the University of South Africa (UNISA) in Pretoria from 27-29 October 2010.

The conference was organised to celebrate the twenty fifth anniversary of the first annual seminar of property law teachers in South Africa. Delegates attended from countries worldwide including Australia, Canada, Germany, and the USA.

The other keynote speakers were Professor Emeritus Dr Dr hc Harm Peter Westermann of Eberhard Karls University, Tübingen; Mr Justice Lex Mpati, the President of the Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa, Professor Dr Eric Dirix, a judge of the Supreme Court of Belgium and Professor André van der Walt, holder of the National Research Foundation Research Chair in Property Law at the University of Stellenbosch.

In his address Dr Steven remarked on the strong links between Scottish and South African academic property lawyers before going on to consider a number of current themes in the law on real security rights. He concluded that there was a clear need for further scholarship in this area.
