Chair of Public International Law, Professor Nehal Bhuta, will be attending the invitation only, annual Lieber Workshop in the Laws of War convened by West Point’s Lieber Institute for Law and Land Warfare.
Each year the Lieber Workshop brings together scholars, military officials and policy makers to discuss papers on important contemporary questions in the laws of war.
This year’s workshop will take place on 28-29 October with the theme 'Proportionality in the law regulating the use of force in international affairs'. Professor Bhuta will present a paper co-authored with his PhD supervisee Rebecca Mignot-Mahdavi on 'Proportionality and the Individualization of War'. The paper reflects on the meaning of proportionality in an age of drone strikes and war against transnational armed groups.
